Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I pay a monthly fee for your services if I already have insurance?

Arrow icon

At any other Primary Care office, you will be paying a copay and an additional office visit charge of minimum $150. Then you will have additional charges for blood work or rapid testing. At myhappydoctor we have up to 90% discount on blood work and up to 90% discount on Imaging, and wholesale price on medications. We do not charge any co-pays, office visit charge for any of the telemedicine visits and limited free house call visits included in the membership. We offer full transparency with all payments. Most insurance plans would be high deductible plans and most patients will never reach the deductible amount in a year so you will be paying everything out of pocket at other offices anyway. At myhappydoctor we will give you relaxed 60 minute visits instead of 5 to 7 minutes at any other office.

What are your support hours?

Arrow icon

Dr. Deepti is available 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for urgent questions and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for primary care needs. If you are having a life threatening emergency or car crash please call 911. Please look at our services page for more information. During our member house-calls and member telemedicine scheduled visits you are encouraged to discuss all your concerns at the same appointment with no additional charge so you do not have to put your health issues on hold.

How do I get blood tests done?

Arrow icon

Blood work is drawn at all Labcorp locations and usually requires you to be fasting overnight. After your dinner at 8 p.m. do not eat anything until morning. Provide the blood sample before breakfast and you will not miss any meals to provide us fasting blood tests. Turnaround time on results in usually 48 hours depending on panels being tested.

Does Dr. Deepti do gynecological exams in office or does she refer out?

Arrow icon

Dr. Deepti, with consent from the patient, can perform manual breast exams during house calls. If patients prefer, they can choose to be referred to a gynecologist for procedures. Dr.Deepti will guide you to the appropriate specialists and place referrals.

Do I need health insurance?

Arrow icon

myhappydoctor does not bill insurance. We are a membership only service. We do not require you to have health insurance to become a member. Our membership fees cover most primary care services but don't cover major surgery, emergencies or hospitalizations. We highly recommend you to have health insurance for services not covered by your membership. Our monthly membership is not an insurance plan.  In general, direct primary care practices pair well with high deductible health plans or medical cost sharing memberships such as Zion HealthShare (https://zionhealthshare.org/) or Sedera (Sedera.com). Cost-sharing plans often give discounts for myhappydoctor  (Direct Primary Care) members. We recommend you consult an insurance broker to decide what plan makes the most sense for you.

Do you have specialists?

Arrow icon

No. Dr. Deepti is your primary care provider. We provide first-level care that statistics show can reduce your need to see specialists. When the need arises, however, we will refer you to a doctor with the expertise you need to treat your particular condition, advanced diseases or manage your chronic pain.

Can I just come in for a single visit or have a recurrent short-term membership?

Arrow icon

Dr. Deepti does not offer short-term membership. We do not offer single appointments as we are a primary care membership-based practice.

What if Dr.Deepti is sick or on vacation?

Arrow icon

We will try our best to keep these at the minimum. Further, primary care is not urgent care and we can plan and schedule telemedicine visits and housecalls around these events with minimal interruptions to your ongoing care. Dr.Deepti will do her best to accommodate for your health but if she is unable to attend to you immediately for 3-4 weeks in a year when she is on vacation, please use local urgent care services or telemedicine services until she is available. She will provide you with options of affordable services for these circumstances.

Can I refuse testing?

Arrow icon

We do not order testing unless it is under evidence based guidelines and recommended for monitoring or diagnosing a particular disease or monitoring the side effects of medications. You can absolutely refuse testing. However, it is always Dr. Deepti's goal to first do no harm. Certain medications require further testing to monitor safety. Certain medical conditions benefit from periodic testing. You have the right to refuse any testing you do not want; however, Dr. Deepti has the responsibility to not prescribe any medications that are not safe without appropriate monitoring. We have done everything we can to make testing as affordable as possible.

Can the doctor make referrals to specialists?

Arrow icon

Yes, she can refer you to specialists. If you have insurance and wish to use that for a specialist appointment you can check with the specialists office if they accept your insurance. We will not be doing any prior authorizations for insurance. Most insurances will still allow Dr. Deepti to order labs, write prescriptions, and make referrals. If you aren’t sure whether your insurance works with seeing Dr. Deepti, please call and ask your insurance if an out of network doctor can write a referral, etc. If you have Kaiser that will not let us do anything within their network, then in that situation we are simply an affordable option in parallel with your insurance. Dr.Deepti is able to order labs, imaging and referrals for patients with Medicare insurance.

What if I have to go to the hospital?

Arrow icon

If you are hospitalized, a hospital doctor will take care of you during your stay in the hospital. Dr.Deepti does not do hospital shifts anymore but will follow up with you during and after your hospitalization and can talk to your hospital doctor as many times as necessary to make the transition of care smooth. We will obtain records from the hospital once you are discharged and add them to your chart.

Does Dr. Deepti do dermatological work in office or will she refer out to dermatology ?

Arrow icon

Dr.Deepti can handle most dermatological needs. She routinely performs skin checks on patients and if she thinks a spot needs attention she will provide it. If there is something more suspicious or you need dermatologic procedures, she will refer you to a local dermatologist.

Is this concierge medical care?

Arrow icon

No. Concierge services often cost several thousands dollars more per year. Our goal is to keep prices fair with care that’s simple, accessible, personal, comprehensive, transparent, and most of all affordable.

Is it too expensive?

Arrow icon

You’ll save money in the long run by being able to select a less-expensive high-deductible health insurance policy while remaining confident you can afford the routine medical care you need. You won’t feel the need to push off expensive visits. Getting care before your health worsens helps limit hospitalizations, surgeries and serious emergency room visits, so you’ll be healthier, happier, and save money as well.

What services are not covered by the membership?

Arrow icon

Hospitalizations, pediatric services, surgical procedures, oxygen or nebulizations, Emergency Room visits, specialist care, urgent care services (with some exceptions for medical acute care services) are not included in the membership. Even though medications, pathology fees, labs, imaging, physical therapy, are not included, we have them heavily discounted through us. We do not provide vaccines but we will guide you to the locations that have affordable prices. We will also guide you to the lowest cost self-pay diagnostic colonoscopy specialist service if you do not want to use insurance. We will keep including new services in the future to give you the least expenses and add value to the membership. Membership is only available for patients 18 years and above at this time. We accept Medicare-eligible patients.

What if I stop the membership and want to re-enroll?

Arrow icon

We don't want you to have to stay if you don't like it here. You can cancel anytime with a 30 day notice. If your membership account lapses or is terminated, then we will be unable to extend future membership.

Do you prescribe controlled medications for pain or anxiety?

Arrow icon

Because we are unable to provide the multidisciplinary approach, perform random drug screens as required by the Drug Enforcement Agency - that is now the standard of care for chronic pain management, we do not prescribe and manage chronic opioid medications. However, we do help patients manage their pain with referrals to physical therapy for great cash prices, appropriate adjunctive medications, and education. We do not write prescriptions for medical marijuana or benzodiazepines. We do not prescribe testosterone.

Which locations are you currently serving?

Arrow icon

myhappydoctor is serving North San Diego locations in and around Scripps Ranch including 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain, Carmel Valley, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos. If you live outside this area, please let Dr. Deepti know for clarification. myhappydoctor telemedicine services can be requested by any adult in California.
